Fire Apparatus Driver Training Course – June 21 & 22

Fire Apparatus Driver Training is a 16-hour training program that is designed for all firefighters who drive fire apparatus. The program includes classroom and practical applications.

Topics covered include state driving laws, driver liabilities, accident prevention, defensive driving, safe driving techniques, safe driving speeds, air brake systems, auxiliary braking devices, intersection safety and safe backing practices. Special emphasis will be placed on theory, testing and driving apparatus with air brakes. Practical applications include an apparatus check, an air brake test, and a driving skills course.

Fire Apparatus Driver Training is based on NFPA 1002 Fire Apparatus Driver/Operator, NFPA 1451 Fire & Emergency Service Vehicle Operations Training Program, Title 49 Code of Federal Regulations Part 383, Rhode Island General Laws Title 31 Motor and Other Vehicles, apparatus manufacturer’s recommendations and driving experience of the Instructors.

There are no prerequisites for taking this class.

UPDATED: IFSTA 6th Edition – Group Purchasing

The group purchase of the IFSTA 6th Edition 1001 has been approved by Director Pare, and is being coordinated by Sue Hawksley.

This program is also available for Fire Departments who wish to be involved in this group purchase.

Sue Hawksley will be placing the order in June to give people enough time to sign up for this offer, and because in July the Director will take the names of the instructors to IFSTA where they will be put in a database of instructors. This way, in later July, when you sign onto the IFSTA website you can access the power points and other teaching materials for the program you teach for free.

2014 National Fire Academy – State Weekend

Agenda

  • All meals will be provided from Friday evening through Sunday lunch.
  • Lodging is provided for Friday and Saturday nights.
  • Mandatory Orientation Session: Friday evening, July 11, 2014. After orientation, a social will be held with members from the South Carolina fire service.
  • Saturday evening, a special Fallen Firefighters Memorial will be held after class.
  • Saturday, July 12th, classes start at 8 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. A barbecue will be held at the log cabin after the memorial.
  • An NFA Weekend Golf shirt will be provided Application Process
  • A completed application; both the FEMA 119-25-2 (attached) and RIFA application, must be received by May 27, 2014. No phone applications will be accepted.
  • Applications must be filled out COMPLETELY. Incomplete applications will be returned.
  • Students must obtain a FEMA Student Identification Number (SID). (Can be obtained online)
  • A payment of $100 must be made out to: RI Fire Instructor’s Association. (Money orders or Department Checks Only)
